Joseph of Arimathaea

”And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision. And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see. And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.” (1 Samuel 3:1-4)

In these verses we see that Eli is compared to the flickering light of the Menorah, the light of which was ready to go out because Eli was not able to rightly judge his sons, nor the whole of Israel. As we know, the child Samuel “waxed strong” and went on to be great in the Lord and to anoint the first King of Israel, Saul (שׁאוּל)[H7586] which comes from Shal (שׁאל)[H7592] meaning: Request, Petition, Desire, Passion.  King Saul may have very well started out with a desire to please God, but much many of us, he soon fell from his place of honor and glory for Saul is a type of SELF.

In the Strong’s Concordance, the word Shal also means: (TO) OBTAIN and PRAY. Not only did Eli misjudge his sons, but he also misjudged Hannah as she prayed, accusing her of being drunk. Hannah was the wife of Elkanah, which, interestingly enough, means: GOD HAS OBTAINED. As we know, Hannah's PRAYER was heard by God which resulted in the birth of Samuel (meaning: HEARD OF GOD). Just as God heard Hannah, He also heard the petition of Israel that He should set a king over them like all the other nations; to which God then told Samuel, “Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them”. This is the same attitude the people had when the crucified the Lord Jesus and said, ”We will not have this Man reign over us!” and “We have no king but Caesar!” And so it is, even today!

In 1 Samuel chapter 9. . .Saul, after searching for his father’s lost goats, winds up in the land of ZUPH where Samuel dwelt and was known among the inhabitants as an honorable man of God.

Now, turning to 1 Samuel 1:1 we see that ZUPH was the name of the great-great grandfather of Hanna's husband Elkanah. . .which, I assume, is how the land where Samuel dwelt got its name.

ZUPH (צוּף) [H6689] is derived from [H6688] meaning: HONEYCOMB

And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said,

I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:
