Jesus of Nazareth

As Jesus hung on the Cross, Pilate had a sign placed
above His head which read:

“Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews”.

Matthew 2:23 says,

“And He came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth:

that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets,

‘He shall be called a Nazarene’.”

There is only one problem with this verse. . .the phrase “He shall be called a Nazarene" does not appear anywhere in the Old Testament! In fact, neither do the words “Nazareth” or “Nazarene”.

And so it seems we have a mystery on our hands. . .

Or do we?

Isaiah 11:1 says,

“And there shall come forth a rod out of

the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.”

The Hebrew word for “branch” is “netzer” (ונצר)

“Netzer” has a standard value of 346
